2010 will go down as the most successful (and favorite) year of my personal and professional life. From the birth of my daughter Lauren Olivia Jones to my decision to be an entrepreneur again….2010 has been epic for me.
Instead of writing a long reflection post I thought it would be cool to provide a chronological look back at 2010 as I experienced it.
The following is just a glimpse of the year gone by.
1/1/10 – Started the new year as Founder and President of Pepperjam, the company I founded 10 years prior and sold to GSI Commerce in September 2009.
1/16/10 – 1/19/10 – Spoke / moderated a panel at Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas on “Monetizing Blogs for Affiliate Marketing and SEO” with some industry juggernauts, including Murray Newlands and “The Real” Tim Jones.
2/5/10 – The Birth of Lauren Olivia Jones. This was the best day of 2010!!!!!! My heart will be forever changed with the addition of Lauren to my amazing (and growing family).
2/22/10 – 2/25/10 – spoke on a panel at Online Marketing Summit in San Diego, California on “Video Monetization Strategies”
3/21/10 – 3/25/10 – Was the coordinator and master of ceremonies for Search Engine Strategies Affiliate Day. Moderated panels on “Affiliate Marketing for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses,” “Affiliate Marketing and Social Media,” and “Affiliate Marketing 3.0” with an all-star cast of affiliate marketing rock stars, including Todd Crawford (co-founder of Commission Junction), Brad Wilson (Founder of Brad’s Deals – You’ve seen him on the Today Show, Good Morning America and many others), Shawn Collins (co-founder of Affiliate Summit), Oliver Roup (MIT / Harvard Grad and founder of Google Ventures backed VigLink), Jeremy Palmer (Founder of QuiteYourDayJob.com), Peter Figueredo, (CEO of affiliate management powerhouse NETexponent), Adam Viener (Chairman and Founder of imwave) and many more! This event took months of planning and resulted in a world class event!
3/31/10 – Official launch of KrisJones.com.
4/6/10… – Officially kicked off the P90X Challenge, which was an initiative launched by my wife Robyn and I to donate $4,000 to charity, while rallying people from across the country to make a commitment with us to start and complete 90 days of P90X. We ended up donating all of the money to charities ranging from the Volunteers of America to the Make A Wish Foundation! Thanks to every one who participated! BTW – I continue P90X to this day and I recommend it with every ounce of my being! I lost over 20 lbs during the first 90 days and I remain nearly 6 lbs lower than my average high school weight…..and feel better than ever physically, mentally, and emotionally! 4/10/10 – An in-depth 60 minute interview that I conducted with Bill Kelly from PBS affiliate WVIA started airing on television in various parts of Pennsylvania. If you want to get a better sense of my past and my thinking on topics ranging from being a successful entrepreneur to philanthropy this interview covered it.
4/20/10 – I officially announced on this blog that I was leaving Pepperjam to pursue new and exciting entrepreneurial endevours – for those of you that have followed me you’ll know that I am a man of my words! What an exciting trip it’s been post Pepperjam and I can’t wait to make my biggest announcement to date early next year. BTW – I’m very fortunate to have kept in touch with the entire PJ staff and the company is doing amazing under the leadership of my co-founder of Pepperjam Network…who also happens to be one of the top minds in the interactive marketing / affiliate biz, Michael C. Jones, Esq.
4/21/10 – Started a series of new businesses in the areas of venture capital, real estate, and early stage technology. Also founded a holding company with several angel investors from Northeastern, Pennsylvania and began making investments in a range of ventures from refrigerant recovery to bathroom fixtures (sort of) – go figure…but it’s been an amazing ride! 5/2010 – Week long trip with the kids and in-laws to South Beach, Florida.
6/1/10 – 6/21/10 – Purchased 1,700 square feet of office / residential space at Elevations Lofts in Wilkes Barre. Worked with the builder throughout June to prepare for a 6/21/10 move-in.
6/21/10 – Moved into my new office!
7/30/10 – I was the opening night keynote at Start-up Scramble, which was held at Scranton University. Start-up Scramble was a multi-day event for start-up entrepreneurs to build teams and launch “something in 54 hours. The event was hosted by young entrepreneur and social renegade Stephen Douglass, founder of Young Impact.
7/31/10 – The 2nd Edition of my book “SEO Visual Blueprint” was released by Wiley Publishing.
7/31/10 – 8/7/10 – Went on a family vacation to Ocean City, Maryland with kids, my Mom, Dad, sister, brother-in-law Jonathan, and nephew Connor.
8/15/10 – 8/17/10 – I moderated a panel at Affiliate Summit East on “How Bloggers Can Successfully Connect with Audiences,” which included some industry heavyweights, including Drew Bennett of BenSpark.com, Tim Jones of TheRealTimJones.com, Murray Newlands of MurrayNewlands.com, and Eric Schechter, Formerly with ClickBooth….now with Carnival Cruise Lines. The event was held @ the Hilton in New York City.
8/17/10 – I did a book signing of SEO Visual Blueprint hosted by Barnes & Noble in conjunction with Affiliate Summit East.
8/10/10 – I wrote the post “Four (4) Important Principles to Becoming a Successful Entrepreneur (and Individual).”
8/12/10 – I wrote the post “The God Given Gift of Talent,” which shares one of my core beliefs and key ingredients to personal and professional success.
8/16/10 – On this blog I ask you “What Are You Doing To Define Your Dash?” Well?
8/17/10 – 8/18/10 – After taking a red eye from NYC to San Francisco and getting a few hours of sleep….I woke up and moderated a panel on “Competitive Research” (here’s a review), which included Eli Goodman from ComScore, Mark Monroe from MerchantCircle, and Bill Leake of Apogee Search.
8/18/10 – I did a book signing of SEO Visual Blueprint @ the Wiley Booth in conjunction with SES San Fran.
8/19/10 – I spent the day at several Napa Valley, CA vineyards, including one of my favorites Stag’s Leap and closed the evening with a great dinner @ Madera on Sand Hill Road.
8/20/10 – I spent a few hours at Stanford University and stopped by In-N-Out Burger for a burger and fries on the way to the San Francisco airport.
9/13/10 – I wrote the post “Beyond Ideas and Action – Executing Your Personal & Professional Goals,” which I strongly encourage you to read.
9/21/10 – 9/23/10 – I spoke and attended SEOktoberfest in Munich, Germany. This was a highly exclusive event where attendees pay $5,000 to network with some of the top minds in interactive marketing, including Greg Boser, David Naylor, Marcus Tandler, Chris Hedgecock, and Bob Rains. SEOktoberfest turned out to be an epic event – one of the best ever and I can’t wait to return in 2011. Here’s a post I made on the event with a bunch of pics.
9/29/10 – I wrote the post “If You Can’t, You Must,” which includes a simple lesson that will change your life if you adopt it.
9/29/10 – 9/30/10 – I spoke at the Tiger Global Conference in NYC with other notable speakers include Malcolm Gladwell.
10/4/10 – I was the keynote at the 2010 Marywood University Entrepreneurship Lecture Series.
10/10/10 – My wife Robyn and I spent several days with the Kardashians (and the Ridinger’s) @ the Ridinger’s 18,000 square feet New York City apartment. I posted about the experience here. I also got to meet and spend some time with Dallas Cowboys receiver Miles Austin, which was the highlight of the trip for me (aside from hanging out with JR Ridinger who is one of the most extraordinary entrepreneurs I’ve ever met in my life).
10/14/10 – I wrote a must read tribute post to my former Penn State Professor Aaron Pincus entitled “Don’t Play the Music, Let the Music Play You.”
10-18-10 – 10-22-10 – I moderated a panel on “Competitive Research” on Tuesday early afternoon and spoke on a panel entitled “SEO is Dead: Long live SEO!” later in the evening @ Search-Engine Strategies (SES) – Chicago. Both panels were well attended, but I particularly enjoyed sharing the stage with Bruce Clay and Todd Friesen (with moderator Mike Grehan) for the SEO is Dead: Long live SEO! panel!
10-28-10 – Kris Jr. met Former President Bill Clinton (it was my third time) – I posted about it here.
11/2/10 – 11/3/10 – I spoke at the BlueGlass Conference in Florida on a panel titled “How to Buy & Sell Web Companies (the right way)” moderated by Neil Patel and including John Ferber, Co-Founder of Advertising.com, and Jon Kelly, Founder of ThisorThat.
11/5/10 – I did a book signing for SEO Visual Blueprint as part of the Westmoreland Club Author’s Night.
11/8/10 – 11/11/10 – My wife Robyn and I went to Las Vegas for 5 days – I was scheduled to do a solo presentation on “Google Instant” at PubCon Las Vegas, but we were able to take in some R & R and nightlife (we saw magician Chriss Angel, comedian George Wallace, and went out for amazing dinners every night, among the spa, etc.) BTW – I did in fact speak at PubCon and here is a link to the PowerPoint from the presentation.
11-16-10 – I announced the launch of my new angel fund KBJ Capital and “highlighted” a recent $100,000 investment I made in Highlighter.com.
11-16-10 – I went back to my old stomping ground (Wyoming Valley West High School) to speak at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Conference Workshop.
11-22-10 – I wrote the post “Expectations: The Mother of All Personal and Professional Success.” Check it out here.
all month – much needed R & R with my family. Oh ya…..I also decided to jump back into the game as founder and CEO of a new technology company. Stay tuned in early 2011 for updates on what I’m up to.
